Carl Regillo, M.D, FACS

Scientific Advisor

Dr. Carl D. Regillo is a distinguished ophthalmologist specializing in retinal diseases. He graduated as a Phi Kappa Phi Valedictorian from Northeastern University, College of Pharmacy, and earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School on a full military scholarship. He completed his internal medicine internship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and his ophthalmology residency and vitreoretinal fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital, where he served as Co-Chief Resident and was awarded a Heed Ophthalmic Fellowship.

Dr. Regillo served as a vitreoretinal surgeon and Co-Director of the Retina Service at the San Diego Naval Medical Center, earning a Naval Commendation medal and the Ophthalmology Department’s annual teaching award. In 1998, he joined Mid Atlantic Retina and the Retina Service of Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia.

Currently, Dr. Regillo is the Director of the Retina Service of Wills Eye Hospital and a Professor of Ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine. He has led numerous international clinical trials on treatments for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other retinal conditions. He has authored over 300 scientific papers and published 9 major textbooks.

Dr. Regillo has held various prestigious positions, including founder and former Director of the Wills Eye Clinical Retina Research Unit, Chairman of the Wills Eye Institutional Review Board, and Chairman of the American Academy’s BCSC Retina Section committee. He has served on the editorial boards of several leading ophthalmology journals and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has received numerous awards, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement and Lifetime Achievement Awards, and was named one of the “150 Top Innovators in Retina” by Ocular Surgery News and a Charter Inductee of the Retina Hall of Fame.

Dr. Regillo has been recognized as a top retina specialist by various major publications, including Philadelphia Magazine and Newsweek.
